As I try to minimize my EDC I have to find a multitool that can help with almost any scenario that may come up. Whether that’s needing a screwdriver to do some mechanical work, or something more simple like needing a bottle cap opener. Could the Leatherman Surge be that multitool? Let’s find out if this makes the cut for the perfect EDC tool.

The Leatherman Surge is considered by some as too large and heavy, probably not ideal for some to be the perfect EDC tool, but it has some excellent functions that make it ideal.

The weight of the Leatherman Surge is 12.5 OZ

The closed length is 4.5 in

Open Length is 7.0 in

And the Width is 1.7 in

This is made from stainless steel material

This multitool has many purposes, whether you’re looking to get one for whenever you go camping, or if you’re looking to get one because you’re a contractor and always need to be prepared for whatever comes up. Or if you’re just like me, a DIY’er who finds many uses for this not only around the house, but also at work or anywhere you go. Sometimes you just need to cut a piece of tape or you need to open a box, or you need to screw something back together. There are many ways you can find this tool useful.

8 inch ruler

We’ll start off with the ruler that comes integrated with this multitool.

Now you need to make sure it’s completely flat so you can get the most accurate measurement possible if you’re planning to use the full 8 inches of the ruler. Now it may not be the best ruler you’ve ever used. But in a situation where you don’t have a regular ruler or a measuring tape this can definitely come in handy.

Needle Nose pliers and Regular Pliers

Needle nose pliers and Regular pliers always come in handy for wiring, or when gripping screws or jewelry or just about anything where you need some thin pliers to reach and grab something. Sometimes you can’t grab something with your fingers, that’s where Needlenose pliers can come in handy to get the job done. My wife uses them all the time with the jewelry she makes, so they are definitely useful around the house. The regular pliers are just as useful, whether you’re twisting wires, or gripping a screw or bolts. These are always useful too. Just be careful when gripping bolts, you wouldn’t want to strip them.

Premium replaceable wire cutters and hard wire cutters (they can be removed)

These wire cutters are really awesome not only because of the function of cutting wires, but also because once they’re worn out you can get them replaced. All you do is unscrew them and then you screw back in some new ones and you’re good to go. Together with the wire cutters you also get some hard wire cutter, which is also replaceable when you swap out the cutting blades.

Stranded wire cutters

You also get this stranded wire cutters which is kind of hard to see, but you have this small hole, and you can see a small arrow pointing where to put the wire in.

Electric Crimpers

Right beneath the wire cutter you will get the Electric Crimpers, to crimp some wires.

We move on to the tools located on the interior of the handles.

Bit Driver (Philips and flat)

You also get this really useful Philips and flat head screwdriver. You can get different bits for it in case you need a different type of bit. But this is useful and convenient to have because if you ever need to replace the bit, all you have to do is buy a new bit and just swap it out.

Can opener, Bottle opener, Wire stripper

Here you get 3 tools in one, which is the Can opener, a bottle opener and the wire stripper. Again, all of these are extremely useful and come in handy when you don’t have anything else available to handle the tasks that these 3 tools can do.

Awl with thread loop

You also get an Awl with a thread loop. I’ll be honest this is one tool I haven’t used yet. But I am sure some people would find this tool useful.

Large flat head screwdriver , Small flat head screwdriver

You get a large flat head screwdriver, and you also get a smaller flathead screwdriver. Both very useful.

Scissors

You get these scissors which are a pretty good size compared to the scissors on other multitools.

Serrated Knife

You get a serrated knife which you can get similar use out of it as you would with a regular saw. Great To cut rope.

Knife

Then you also get your knife, this is a good size knife. And always comes in handy, just as long as you have it properly sharpened.

Saw

You also get a regular saw, but if you don’t need to use your saw that often, you can swap it out and slip in the file that comes with the tool. All you have to do is remove the T shank lock that is holding the saw in place. Once you unlock it by moving it to the side, you’re able to slip out the saw. Then you just put the file in its plane and lock it. The file comes with a wood/ metal filer and also a diamond coated file.

You can also get other t shank tools and slip them in as long as they have the same t shank design.

Now that we’ve reviewed the tools included, let’s find out if this makes the cut for an EDC tool.

Pros:

You have a very well-built tool, with multiple useful tools. The knife, the screwdrivers, the pliers. The majority of the tools are useful for an EDC situation. I first thought that it had too many flat head screw drivers because it has 3 in total, but in reality they all have come in handy whether its to tighten a wall outlet or changing the batteries on one of my kids toys. They each serve its purpose. I believe the only tools I haven’t used is the Awl and the Can opener. But in reality, most of the tools included in this Leatherman are extremely useful. It’s made with everyone in mind, whether you’re a contractor or just an average person like me, it’s useful for work and around the house. Like I mention, it comes in handy when tightening some outlet screws, or if you’re opening a glass bottle, or also when you’re opening mail or cutting a piece of tape. It beats using your teeth that’s for sure.

CONS

The only CON from my end is the weight. Some people will find it too heavy for an EDC, but if you don’t mind the weight then this is a good choice for an EDC.

So let me know in the comments, if you have this multitool, do you use it as your EDC? Do you use all the tools? Would you change anything on it? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for your time
